Decision on Facebook opening set for July 31: Palak
Representatives from social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, have been summoned to the BTRC on July 31. Until then, all social media will remain closed, stated State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
The minister made the remark during a press conference at the BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) Bhaban on Sunday (July 28).
He said, "We have inquired why no action has been taken against violent content. Representatives from Facebook, TikTok, and other social media platforms are scheduled to appear in person at the BTRC on July 31 to provide an explanation. The government will continue to block these platforms until a satisfactory explanation is given."
Earlier, mobile internet was shut down on the night of July 17, followed by broadband internet on the night of July 18, amid violence related to the quota reform movement.
After five days, on Tuesday night (July 23), broadband internet service was launched experimentally. This service was introduced on a priority basis in diplomatic quarters, banks and financial institutions, electricity, freelancing and technology sectors, and export-oriented industries.
From Wednesday night (July 24), internet service became available in residential areas as well. However, Facebook and TikTok remain closed.
