Despite our differences, we are not enemies: CA to religious leaders
Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus sought advice from religious leaders on how to obtain accurate and unrestricted information regarding the issues faced by minorities.
He emphasized the need to ensure that information is collected safely.
Speaking at the beginning of a discussion with religious leaders on Thursday, he said: “Despite our differences, we are not enemies."
Dr Yunus added: “The reason I’m here today is that I have seen some questions raised in the media, and I am here to find answers to them."
Recalling his remarks at the airport before the government was formed, Dr Yunus said: "I had said that we are one family. We may have different opinions, religions, and customs, but we are all members of the same family. When it comes to our identity as citizens, we come together as Bangladeshis, as members of the same family.
"After taking the oath, I started hearing about the persecution of minorities, which made me feel distressed. Immediately, I visited Dhakeshwari Temple and reiterated that we are all members of the same family. Regardless of all demands, one thing is clear: we all have equal rights—the right to speak, to practice our religion, and to work. These rights are guaranteed by the constitution.”
Dr Yunus also mentioned the government's efforts to ensure security during the Durga Puja celebrations, saying: "That event became a national celebration, and I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing we contributed to it."
He added: "Now, however, we are hearing new reports of attacks and atrocities. Foreign and local media are reporting this, and I am investigating the situation. After looking into it, it seems the situation is not as severe as it’s being portrayed. The reports are inconsistent, and this is not acceptable.
Dr Yunus emphasized the need for accurate information, saying relying on government sources alone is insufficient as they often report according to those in power.
He said the first step is creating an environment to prevent such incidents. If they occur, immediate action is necessary. The majority of people support this. “We must take collective responsibility, with information and redress at the core."
