DIG, 3 SPs arested

A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and three Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been arrested. The detainees are: SP Asaduzzaman, Commandant of the In-Service Training Center, Nilphamari, Mollah Nazrul Islam, former Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police,  SP Abdul Mannan, attached to Rangpur Range and SP Abul Hasnat, also attached to Rangpur Range.

They were arrested from different police units on Friday night (February 7) and brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) headquarters by Saturday afternoon (February 8).

Details of the Arrests

According to police sources, DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam, who was assigned to the Rajshahi Sardah Police Academy, was detained with the assistance of the District Police Academy. Meanwhile, SPs Asaduzzaman, Abdul Mannan, and Abul Hasnat were arrested by the Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

Allegations Against the Officers

DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam previously served as the Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police and was also in charge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch. He faced allegations of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and excessive use of force.

SP Abul Hasnat, a 27th batch BCS officer, was the Superintendent of Police in Bagerhat. He faced severe criticism for his political remarks during the 2024 elections and the anti-discrimination student movement.

SP Abdul Mannan, who had served as SP in Comilla and Sylhet, was accused of using excessive force during elections and the anti-discrimination student movement. Additionally, while serving as SP in the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, he allegedly staged false anti-terrorism operations.

SP Asaduzzaman, a 25th batch officer, was previously the Superintendent of Police in Noakhali. He was widely criticized for excessive force and unethical actions during the elections and the anti-discrimination student movement.

Following the July-August protests, multiple cases, including charges of homicide, were filed against them. Since then, they had been attached to different police units.

পুলিশের ডিআইজি ও তিন পুলিশ সুপার আটক

পুলিশের একজন ডিআইজি ও তিনজন পুলিশ সুপারকে আটক করা হয়েছে। তারা হলেন, নীলফামারীর ইন সার্ভিস ট্রেনিং সেন্টারের কমান্ড্যান্ট পুলিশ সুপার আসাদুজ্জামান, গাজীপুর মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশের সাবেক কমিশনার মোল‍্যা নজরুল ইসলাম এবং রংপুর রেঞ্জে সংযুক্ত পুলিশ সুপার আব্দুল মান্নান ও আবুল হাসনাত।

শুক্রবার (৭ ফেব্রুয়ারি) রাতে পুলিশের বিভিন্ন ইউনিট থেকে তাদের আটক করে শনিবার (৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি) দুপুর পর্যন্ত ঢাকা মহানগর গোয়েন্দা পুলিশ (ডিবি) কার্যালয়ে আনা হয়েছে।

পুলিশ সূত্রে জানায়, রাজশাহী সারদা একাডেমিতে সংযুক্ত থাকা ডিআইজি মোল‍্যা নজরুল ইসলামকে আটক করা হয় জেলা পুলিশ একাডেমির সহায়তায়। পুলিশ সুপার আসাদুজ্জামান, আব্দুল মান্নান ও আবুল হাসনাতকে আটক করে রংপুর মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশ।

পুলিশ সূত্র জানায়, আটক ডিআইজি মোল‍্যা নজরুল ইসলাম গাজীপুর মেট্রোপলিটনের সাবেক কমিশনার ও ঢাকা মহানগর গোয়েন্দা বিভাগের দায়িত্বে ছিলেন। তার বিরুদ্ধে খুন-গুমসহ অনৈতিক শক্তি প্রয়োগের অভিযোগ ছিল।

বিসিএস ২৭ ব্যাচের আবুল হাসনাত বাগেরহাটের পুলিশ সুপার থাকাকালে ২০২৪ সালের নির্বাচন ও বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলন দমনে রাজনৈতিক বক্তব্য দিয়ে কঠোর সমালোচনার মুখে পড়েন।

আর পুলিশ সুপার আব্দুল মান্নান কুমিল্লা ও সিলেটে এসপি থাকাকালে নির্বাচন ও বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে শক্তি প্রয়োগ করেন। এর আগে সিটিটিসিতে পুলিশ সুপার থাকাকালে তার বিরুদ্ধে জঙ্গি নাটক সাজানোর একাধিক অভিযোগ রয়েছে।

অন্যদিকে ২৫ ব্যাচের কর্মকর্তা আসাদুজ্জামান নোয়াখালী জেলার পুলিশ সুপার ছিলেন। নির্বাচন ও পরবর্তীতে বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনের সময় শক্তি প্রয়োগ ও অনৈতিক কাজের জন্য ব্যাপক সমালোচিত ছিলেন।

জুলাই-আগস্ট আন্দোলনের পর তাদের প্রত্যেকের বিরুদ্ধে হত‍্যাসহ একাধিক মামলা হলে পুলিশের বিভিন্ন ইউনিটে সংযুক্ত রাখা হয়।
