DMP's 'special measures' to solve traffic problems during Ramadan
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has undertaken some special initiatives to contain excessive traffic congestion in the capital during the month of Ramadan.
There will be special arrangements from 3:00pm to 7:00pm to solve traffic problems before and after the iftar, said DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman at a press conference on Monday (March 11) afternoon.
He said, “The crime department of the DMP will work along with the traffic police so that people can go home in time and have the iftar with their loved ones. We will have additional deployments on the road from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Our traffic and crime officers will work in coordination with those concerned to solve traffic problems at various important places including the markets.”
Calling for cooperation of the city dwellers, he said, "We need the cooperation of those who use cars or those operating businesses around the roads. Otherwise, the police will not be able to solve the traffic problem overnight in the area of 306 square kilometers where 200 million people live. But we are optimistic, if everyone cooperates, it will be possible to solve the traffic problem.”
“The businessmen of old Dhaka can solve traffic problems locally with the help of the police,” he added.
Addressing the organisations involved in renovation work digging the roads like WASA, DESCO and Titas Gas, Habibur Rahman said, “Keeping in mind the interests of all, I would request you to stop these works in the month of Ramadan. I will inform the organisations concerned by letter about stopping these works.”
In addition to this, the DMP will also be active to prevent the increase in the prices of essential commodities during Ramadan.
The DMP Commissioner said, "One more challenge in the month of Ramadan is preventing the hijacking from in front of banks or on the roads. Apart from this, illegal hoarding and artificial price increase and food adulteration are also challenges for us during the month of Ramadan. Police have already taken initiatives to solve these problems. Our uniformed and plainclothes police will work to solve these problems.”
