The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has sent 167 beggars to shelter homes picking them up from different areas under the city corporation.

DNCC Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Zulkar Nayan, Executive Magistrate Mahbub Hasan and Executive Magistrate Mahmudul Hasan conducted drives to free Gulshan, Banani, Tejgaon, Notun Bazar and Mirpur areas of beggars on Tuesday (April 2) and Wednesday (April 3).

Officials of the Department of Social Services were also present in the campaign.

On Wednesday (April 3), 97 beggars were detained and on Tuesday (April 2), 70 beggars from Gulshan, Banani, Tejgaon, NotunBazar and Mirpur areas. All of them have been sent to government shelter homes for rehabilitation.

Zulkar Nayan said that despite being declared as beggar-free areas in Dhaka, the number of beggars has increased in those areas recently. Harassment of foreign nationals is a regular phenomenon in those areas, especially in the diplomatic zone of Gulshan and Baridhara.

“We have started the campaign to make Dhaka free of beggars, and it will continue,” he added.
