DU bans all forms of political activities on campus
The Dhaka University (DU) administration has decided to suspend all forms of political activities by students, teachers, officers, and employees on campus until further notice.
This decision was made during an emergency syndicate meeting held on Thursday at the Vice-Chancellor's Lounge in the administrative building of Dhaka University. Out of the 17 syndicate members, 15 participated in the meeting.
Several syndicate members confirmed this information after the meeting.
A syndicate member, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the emergency meeting took place from 7pm to 8:45pm in the Vice-Chancellor's Lounge. After two hours of discussion, the decision was finalized.
Another source revealed that a preliminary decision has been made to ban politics at Dhaka University until further notice. The matter will be officially announced Friday.
Meanwhile, student coordinator Sarjis Alam also confirmed the development in a Facebook post. He said: "With this decision, let the journey toward creating a new Bangladesh begin today."
During the quota reform movement, one of the nine demands made by the students was to ban partisan politics on university campuses.
In face of the student-led protests, the Awami League government fell on August 5. Since then, a group of students has been holding protests and rallies, demanding an end to partisan politics on university campuses.
Meanwhile, last night (Wednesday), a young man was beaten to death on suspicion of being a thief at Fazlul Huq Hall (FH Hall) of DU. On the same night, a former leader of the Chhatra League was beaten to death by a group of students at Jahangirnagar University.
These two incidents sparked widespread discussion throughout the day across various quarters.
Several groups, organizations, and people from different walks of life condemned the killings.
In response to the beating death at DU, four students from FH Hall have already been arrested.
Against this backdrop, the syndicate's emergency meeting decided to suspend all forms of partisan politics on the university campus.
