A Dutch company, APM (AP Moller-Maersk), is set to invest \$800 million in developing a green port at Laldia Char in Chattogram, according to Ashik Chowdhury, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA).

APM currently operates ports in 60 countries worldwide.

Chowdhury made the announcement during a visit to Laldia Char at 9.00am on Thursday (May 8).

He emphasized the government’s vision of transforming Bangladesh into a manufacturing hub and noted that this green port project is a major step toward achieving that goal.

“The government is taking this initiative very seriously,” he said. “We need a long-term plan. The current port’s capacity is limited, and even if it’s increased sixfold, it still won’t match Vietnam’s scale. That’s why an expert organisation has been tasked with optimising operations in limited space.”

Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, and Chattogram Port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman were also present there.
