EC finds evidence of NID data leak against 5 institutions
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that five institutions using National Identity Card (NID) services have leaked data to third parties. Initial investigation has found evidence of this.
He gave this information to reporters after a view-exchange meeting with institutions using NID verification services at the Election Building in Agargaon on Monday (February 10).
The institutions from which initial evidence of data leak was found are the Directorate General of Health Services, UCB Bank's Upay, Chattogram Port Authority, Directorate of Women Affairs and the Finance Ministry's IBAS.
The EC said that these institutions have been booked. It is being investigated whether this happened due to the negligence of the institutions or intentionally. If someone has done this on their own initiative, it is a punishable crime.
He said that 182 institutions use this service from the NID sub-division. There should be a limit on data use. The thief cannot be blamed for leaving it open. Everyone should be vigilant.
He also said that 182 organizations verify NID information from the Election Commission. Several organizations are taking services from other organizations, which violates the terms of the agreement. It will be reviewed how much information an organization needs, and whether it is taking more than what it is taking.
The EC is holding a three-day exchange of views with 182 organizations that are receiving SID information verification services.
