Education Minister urges to investigate if militants are active in BUET
Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel has urged to investigate whether the activities of any militant group are being carried out in Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET).
The education minister has asked all parties to be careful not to create chaos and disrupt the learning environment in any way, amid unrest over student politics in this institute of higher engineering education. He also pointed out that the Ministry of Education has discussed with the university authorities about militant or extremist activities.
In 2019, after the murder of student Abrar Fahad, BUET authorities banned student politics on campus. In this circumstance, some activists of Chhatra League carried out activities on the campus last Wednesday night. The general students have been protesting against this since Friday.
However, after a programme at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital on Saturday (March 30), the education minister said, "A few days ago, we saw many people complained that there was a discussion and criticism of some militant groups secretly operating there. We will investigate that too in depth."
Nowfel said, "Any individual who has the mindset to appear to be acting as if they are pandering to radical or militant groups must be stopped and resisted. There are law enforcement agencies, our investigators, and special counter-terrorism teams dealing with militancy, they will also work. That's not just for one organization but for all organizations.”
"It must be investigated whether someone is fueling the militant-extremist mentality from behind. Because this discussion is coming up again and again," he added.
