Residents to be freed from curse of toxic stench

Electricity to be produced from garbage in Cumilla

Cumilla City Corporation has taken the initiative to generate electricity from Bhagar (dumping station) in Cumilla City. Half a million residents in the suburbs and Jagannathpur areas will be relieved of three decades of toxic stench.

Following the initiatives, Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League President Bir Muktijoddha AKM Bahauddin Bahar MP, along with City Corporation Mayor Dr. Tahsin Bahar Suchona, inspected the landfill in the Jhakunipara area of Cumilla's Jagannathpur union on Sunday afternoon (June 9).

Among the others, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Cumilla City Corporation Ashrafun Nahar, Executive Engineer Abu Sayem Bhuiyan, Md. Maine Uddin Chishti, Jagannathpur UP Chairman Mamunur Rashid Mamun, and other officials were present there.

During the inspection, AKM Bahauddin said, "We will generate eco-friendly energy from waste. The stench of waste has caused discomfort for many residents in this area for a long time. With the assistance of the World Bank, we have implemented two projects: waste management and waste-to-energy. The waste will be converted into electricity, which will be utilized for governmental purposes."

"People will be relieved from the stench. Some initiatives have been taken, and City Corporation officers will act accordingly," he added.

Dr. Tahsin Bahar Souchna, said, "Bangladesh is moving far under the opportune leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Bangabandhu's daughter. Bangladesh is now on the highway of development. Once the place that has become open or wasteland will produce electricity from that dirt, we are here on the ground to plan well how we will work."

Dr. Tahsin Bahar Suchona spoke highly of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She said, "Under the esteemed leadership of Bangabandhu's daughter and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh is making significant progress. We are now on the path of development."

"Areas that are abandoned or deemed wastelands will soon generate electricity from their waste. We are here to plan our approaches for effective implementation," she added.

Mamunur Rashid, local UP chairman, said, "The environment of 22 villages within a three- to four-kilometer radius of dumping station is polluted by garbage stench and smoke from burning waste. Consequently, half a million people are affected by foul odors and toxic fumes. Residents are pleased with the MP and Mayor's initiative to modernize waste processing in the area."
