Ex-acting mayor of Gazipur detained 'while fleeing' to India
Gazipur City Awami League vice-president and former acting mayor of the city, Asadur Rahman Kiron, has been arrested from Sharsha border in Jashore while trying to flee to India.
On Monday (November 18) night, he was detained by the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Shikarpur camp while illegally crossing the Shikarpur border in Sharsha upazila into India.
BGB public relations officer Shariful Islam confirmed the information on Tuesday (November 19).
Major Farzeen Fahim, deputy commander of Jashore 49 BGB Battalion, said that a patrol team from Shikarpur BOP conducted a raid on the Shikarpur border at around 11:30 pm on a tip-off and arrested him.
The arrested Asadur Rahman Kiron was the councilor of Ward 43 of Tongi's Pagar area of Gazipur City Corporation and served as the acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation for two terms, as well as the vice-president of Gazipur City Awami League.
Asadur Rahman Kiron is accused in several cases, including obstructing the student movement and murder during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Asadur Rahman Kiron took over as acting mayor after Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam was temporarily suspended in 2021. He had previously served as acting mayor for two and a half years.
