A Dhaka court placed former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam on a three-day remand on Wednesday in connection with an Anti-Discrimination Student Movement case filed at Uttara East police station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the remand order on Wednesday (January 22) after the investigating officer requested a 10-day remand.

Earlier in the day, Atiqul Islam was brought to the court from jail. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

Atiqul Islam was arrested on October 16 in the Mohakhali DOHS area by Mohammadpur police. He was later denied bail in three separate murder cases and sent to jail the following day.

According to case records, during the anti-discrimination movement on August 5, Md Fazlul Karim, a participant, was injured by gunfire allegedly orchestrated by Atiqul. Karim was admitted to the hospital, where he later died in the ICU that evening.

Fazlul Karim’s brother, Anwar Hossain Ayanal, filed a case on August 21 at Uttara East police station.

On November 13, he was placed on a five-day remand in connection with the Bakul Mia murder case. After completing that remand, he was returned to prison on November 23.
