Ex-social welfare secy detained at HSIA

Police arrested former social welfare secretary Ismail Hossain from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday night.

According to Ershad Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the Airport Police Station, Ismail, a member of the 11th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration), was about to travel to the US.

"He was arrested as a suspect from the airport terminal last night under Section 54 of CrPC."

Section 54 authorises the police and army personnel to make arrests without a warrant.

On Saturday, airport police sent him to a Dhaka court seeking a seven-day remand. The court granted two days, the OC said, adding that they are now verifying if there are any pending cases or allegations against him.

"If any case is found, he will be arrested in that case," he said.

Ismail was forced into retirement on 22 October.
