Fire erupts at Karnaphuli Paper Mills Friday midnight

A fire has erupted at Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM), a state-owned paper mill located at Chandraghona under Kaptai upazila of Rangamati, on Friday midnight.

The fire erupted around 1:00am Saturday while the factory was in operation. However, the fire service brought the fire under control within an hour.

According to KPM sources, after the fire broke out in the production machine-2 of the factory, the security department and Kaptai Fire Service brought the fire under control after the hectic efforts of an hour.

The sources said the belt of the production machine was burnt due to the fire. Besides, several raw materials and finished paper have also been damaged. However, the exact extent of the damage could not be immediately known.

Kaptai fire service station officer Md Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury said, "We reached KPM at 1.15am after getting the news. The fire was brought under control after an hour of effort. It is believed that the fire started due to electrical short circuit or internal friction of the machine.”
