Fire from gas cylinder leakage burns 4 in Malibagh

A fire erupted due to leakage in a gas cylinder at a hotel at Malibagh in the capital, critically injuring four people.

The incident took place at Hotel Shahjalal in Malibagh around 6:15pm on Wednesday (March 20).

Three of the injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and one to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The injured have been identified as Md Sabuj (24), Maroof (16), Julhas (18) and Abdul Hannan (40). All of them are employees of the hotel.

Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery’s Doctor Tariqul Islam said four burnt patients were brought from Malibagh this evening. Of them, Sabuj sustained 27 percent burn injuries, Maruf 18 percent, and Julhas 16 percent. They have been referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Hannan is currently undergoing treatment at the emergency ward of Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute. We have reported the matter to the DMCH police camp in-charge, he added.

Hayatul Islam Khan, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Motijheel division, said the workers of a restaurant named Shahjalal Hotel and Restaurant were preparing iftar on the ground floor of a building at Malibagh intersection. Four employees of the restaurant were injured in the fire.
