Five deaths in a day in separate incidents across Sylhet
In Sylhet, five people died in separate incidents within a single day. Among them, two died in a road accident, one passed away while in Itikaf (religious seclusion), and the bodies of the remaining two were recovered.
The fatal road accident occurred on the evening of March 23, Sunday, near the new bridge point area of Muktirgaon in Chatak, Sunamganj. The incident took place when a motorcycle collided with a truck parked on the side of the road, resulting in casualties. While two individuals lost their lives, another motorcyclist was injured in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as Md. Shahinur Islam (34), a Jubo Dal leader and expatriate in Saudi Arabia, son of Nobab Ali from Kharukhali village in Kalaruka Union, and Humayun Rashid (32), a Jubo Dal leader, son of Faruk Mia from the same village. The injured, Abid Hossain Milon, a Chhatra Dal leader and resident of Lambahati village in Kalaruka Union, was admitted to a private hospital in the city. His condition is reported to be critical.
The trio was traveling on a motorcycle to attend a BNP-organized Iftar mahfil when the accident occurred. While attempting to overtake a CNG auto-rickshaw, their motorcycle collided head-on with the stationary truck. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Mukhlesur Rahman, the Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chatak Police Station, stated that two individuals died after their motorcycle collided with a truck while attempting to overtake a CNG auto-rickshaw at high speed during Iftar time. The bodies have been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, in Jokiganj, Sylhet, a school teacher named Juned Ahmed passed away while observing Itikaf. Juned Ahmed, a resident of Gechua Boro Moholla in Sultanpur Union and the assistant headteacher of Ganipur-Kamalganj School and College, died on the afternoon of March 23, Sunday, at the Gechua Boro Moholla Mosque. It is reported that he had begun a 10-day Itikaf at the mosque starting from the 20th of Ramadan.
The recovery of the body took place on the same evening. An unidentified man's body was found near the boundary wall of a 31-bed hospital in the Khadimpara area of Ward No. 4 under Shahporan Police Station. The deceased is estimated to be between 45 and 50 years old, but his identity remains unknown.
Regarding this matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monir Hossain of Shahporan Police Station stated that the individual was a vagabond. Preliminary assumptions suggest that it was a natural death. The body has already been buried.
On the same day, another body was recovered in Biswanath, Sylhet. In the early hours of the morning, police found the body of a young man hanging from a mosquito net stand in a flat on Rampasha Road in Biswanath Municipality. The deceased has been identified as Abdul Mukit (35), son of Abdus Shahid from Mirerchar village in the upazila. The body bore injury marks on the abdomen and legs, and one leg was tied to the mosquito net stand with a rope.
Family members of the deceased stated that Abdul Mukit worked at a supermarket in Biswanath Municipality. His expatriate sister owns a flat on Rampasha Road, which had no tenants. Abdul Mukit was responsible for looking after the flat.
Enamul Haque Chowdhury, the Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Biswanath Police Station, stated that the incident could be a case of suicide. However, an autopsy will be conducted on the body, and the police are investigating the matter. If the family files a case, further legal action will be taken accordingly.
