Flood water inundates Dhaka-Chattogram highway
Feni, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong, Lakshmipur and Khagrachari have been severely affected by flash floods caused by landslides and rain.
Due to the flood water, the Dhaka-Chattogram highway has been submerged under knee-deep water at Chouddagram upazila in Cumilla, creating a 5 km long traffic jam.
Vehicle drivers and common passengers are suffering immensely due to this.
The traffic jam was created on Thursday (August 22) morning and is continuing till now. The traffic jams are getting longer as the day progresses.
Witnesses said about two kilometers of road of the highway from Nabagram to Chauddagram Bazar has been submerged in water, slowing down the movement of vehicles.
A covered van driver said that he was caught in a traffic jam at 6am in Chauddagram. “After the Kalir Bazar, the highway is under knee-deep water. Due to which driving is very difficult. I have been stuck for almost 1 hour,” he said.
A bus driver said, “I covered one kilometer road in about 40 minutes, driving very carefully. If the water remains on the road like this, the traffic jam will be longer as the day progresses.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mia Bazar Highway Police Station SM Lokman Hossain said the movement of vehicles has slowed down due to water on the highway. Highway police are working to clear the traffic jam.
Meanwhile, due to rainfall, waterlogging has occurred in the low-lying areas of Chattogram city. Various roads in low-lying areas are submerged in water up to the knees and in some places up to the waist. As a result, people who go out for daily needs have suffered greatly.
