Floods in Sylhet: Border areas see improvement, cities face deterioration
The flood situation in the border area of Sylhet has improved somewhat, with water levels already beginning to recede. However, Sylhet city remains flooded as the Surma River continues to overflow.
Flash floods have affected various areas of the city, including four upazilas of Sylhet, since Thursday night (May 30) due to upstream water from India.
According to Deepak Ranjan Das, Executive Engineer of the Sylhet Water Development Board, Cherrapunji in India received 54 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. As a result, the Surma River is flowing 83 cm above the normal level at Kanighat Upazila, and the Kushiara River is 193 cm above the normal level at Amalsid point in Jokiganj. Consequently, the water level in Sylhet city is now about 7 cm above the borderline.
The water level of the Surma River has risen, causing it to enter the city through various canals, including those in Taltala, Mendibagh, Machimpur, Terratan, Jatarpur, and Upshahar. As a result, roads and houses are being flooded.
Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation held an advance preparation meeting to deal with the flood situation.
Meanwhile, the Sylhet City Corporation held a preparatory meeting to address the flood situation. Public Relations Officer Sajlu Lashkar announced that the leave of all officers and employees has been canceled.
He said, "Panel Mayor Makhlishur Rahman Kamran has made this decision. During the meeting, it was resolved to provide various emergency services to manage the flood situation. A 24-hour control room (01958284800) has been established for city residents, and arrangements have been made to provide cooked food if the situation deteriorates."
