Summer has arrived, and temperatures are rising. To protect the body from heat, it is essential to stay in a cool environment and consume foods that help keep the body refreshed. Many people believe that staying in an air-conditioned room is enough to remain healthy during this season. However, doctors emphasize that along with a comfortable environment, consuming seasonal fruits, vegetables, and climate-appropriate cooked foods is necessary for maintaining good health.

Renowned medicine specialist and Ekushey Padak awardee Professor Dr. A B M Abdullah suggests consuming foods with high water content during this season. He particularly recommends seasonal fruits such as watermelon, apple, cucumber, and vegetables like bottle gourd, ridge gourd, pointed gourd, snake gourd, carrot, raw papaya, spinach, and tomato. Additionally, barley flour (sattu) and yogurt are highly beneficial.

Dr. Abdullah explains that an apple contains 86% water. If soaked in water with three pinches of salt for an hour before eating, it can help prevent many summer-related illnesses. He strongly recommends eating one apple daily to stay healthy during the summer.

Regarding cucumber, he notes that it contains a high amount of water, fiber, and very few calories. It aids in weight loss, helps relieve constipation, keeps the body hydrated, and reduces the risk of heat stroke.

Dr. Abdullah highlights barley flour (sattu) as a highly nutritious food. Drinking sattu mixed with water in summer helps keep the body hydrated, maintains body temperature, and fulfills nutritional needs.

Talking about yogurt, he explains that this probiotic-rich food improves digestion, reduces inflammation in the stomach, strengthens bones and teeth, and helps cool the body. He recommends consuming sour yogurt regularly for weight management during summer. Additionally, lightly cooked green mango dal (sour lentil soup) and drumstick dal help cool the body.

When asked about coconut water, the doctor said it is extremely beneficial for health. It replenishes electrolytes, keeps the body hydrated, and aids digestion. Therefore, drinking coconut water is essential for staying healthy.

He also emphasizes the importance of drinking adequate water. A healthy adult woman should drink 2.5–3 liters of pure water daily, while a healthy adult man should consume 3.5–5 liters. However, kidney patients should consult a doctor before determining their water intake. He also suggests drinking lemon water or fruit juices during the hot season.

Among seasonal fruits, raw mango is highly effective in preventing dehydration. It contains potassium, vitamin C, and magnesium, which help keep the body cool. Musk melon (Bangi) is another highly nutritious fruit that is affordable and widely available. It is excellent for cooling the body during hot weather.

Sugarcane juice is another effective summer drink, but Dr. Abdullah advises consuming it from a clean and hygienic source. Wood apple (Bel) juice is highly effective in keeping the stomach cool. This fruit is rich in beta-carotene, protein, riboflavin, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, calcium, potassium, and fiber.

Lastly, he recommends mint juice, which helps cool the body from within and provides a refreshing sensation. Mint juice is extremely beneficial for health, especially during summer.
