Four held for torturing woman tying hands, cutting hair

Police have arrested four persons in connection with a case filed for torturing a woman by tying her hands, cutting hair and applying ink on her face.

The victim is Fazila Khatun Champa, daughter of Torab Morol of Jikorgaccha upazila while the arrestees are--Shimul Hossain, son of Abdul Hamid of Kalabaganpara, Sharmin Akhter Rumi, wife of Ibrahim Khalil of Padmapukur village, Roni Begum, wife of Mofizur of Beneali village, and Rahima, wife of Mukul Biswas of Padmapukur village.

According to the case statement, the family members of Champa's former daughter-in-law Bithi harassed her and beat her up when she went to visit Bithi at her new husband’s house.

The video of her harassment went viral on Facebook on Sunday.

The one-minute and 40-second video that was shared shows, ‘A crowd of excited people surrounded Champa, who had her hands tied with a scarf. She was being held by four women. One of them was cutting the hair. The excited men and women surrounding her were recording the scene on their mobile phones and rejoicing.’

Later, Champa filed a case against the abusers with Jikorgaccha Police Station.

Champa said that she went to visit her divorced daughter-in-law in Beneali village. Then she was beaten up and tortured by the family members of the daughter-in-law and her face smeared with ink.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhikargachha police station Md. Bablur Rahman Khan said that four persons were arrested in this connection and they were sent to jail.

Champa's son Raihan married Bithi, the daughter of Mukul Biswas of the neighboring Padmapukur village, two years ago. After the marriage, they recently separated as a family due to lack of harmony. After the separation, Bithi married Shimul, the son of Abdul Hamid of Beneali village.

Abul Kashem, a member of ward number 8 of the local Godkhali Union Parishad, said, "I heard that the woman was detained and tortured on suspicion of using amulets and charms (magic). It is not right to torture a person like this."
