In a desperate bid to create public awareness over dumping waste, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has organised a week-long “Garbage Exhibition” in front of the DNCC Nagar Bhaban at Gulshan-2 in the capital. This exhibition started from May 11 and will continue till May 17.

Visiting the exhibition on Wednesday (May 15), DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam warned that punitive action will be taken under the law if garbage is dumped in the canals under the DNCC.

The DNCC has organised the week-long waste exhibition showcasing various types of waste dumped in canals, drains and other places of the capital city.

At this time, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Arafat also visited the exhibition of waste.

The DNCC mayor said, “If the people do not stop throwing garbage indiscriminately, it is not possible for the city corporation alone to keep the canals clean. As city dwellers, we also have responsibilities. And what is the responsibility? …to throw certain garbage in a certain place. Otherwise, our drains are getting blocked, the canals are getting blocked after little rains.”

He said the solid waste is being dumped in the canal in the dark of night. Such offenses will not be exempted. Punitive action will be taken against those who litter the canal.

At the event, State Minister Muhammad Ali Arafat said, “The government will do its work but the citizens should perform the responsibility. The citizens have to fulfill their responsibilities in exchange for the preservation of civil rights of the citizens. A partnership is formed between the government and the citizen when the citizen fulfills his responsibilities. Then the problems are easily removed.”

Barrister Biplab Barua, special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Gazi Mejbaul Hossain Sacchu, president of the Swechchhasebak League, Chief Engineer of DNCC Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Chief Waste Management Officer Captain Mohammad Fida Hasan, Ward-19 Councilor Md Mofizur Rahman, women councilors of reserved seats Amena Begum and Nilufar Yasmin Iti, among others, also visited the exhibition.
