Gas reserves have been found after drilling Kailashtila-8 well at the Kailashtila gas field in Sylhet.  Gas has been found at a depth of 3,438 to 3,447 metres. An estimated 21 million cubic feet of gas per day will be added to the national grid from this well.

Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) will supply this gas to the national grid by constructing a gathering pipeline within the next three months, according to a report prepared by the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and sent to media on Friday (May 24).

According to the report, a new gas layer Horizon-4 has been found in Kailashtila-8 well. The well has 25,040 billion cubic feet of gas reserves. The market value of the gas found in the new well is Tk 1,620 crore. The ministry estimated the market price of the stored gas at the price of Tk 22.87 per cubic metre. However, the entire Kailashtila gas field has recoverable gas reserves of 1,900 billion cubic feet (BCF).

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) officials used Bijay 12 rig to drill Kailashtila-8 well. The drilling of this well started on January 11 this year. After about four and a half months of digging, the state-owned company found gas in the well.

The Kailashtila gas field was discovered in 1962 before the independence of Bangladesh. Then in 1983 gas extraction started from there. There are currently seven gas wells in the Kailashtila gas field. Currently, Petrobangla is extracting 28 million cubic feet of gas per day from this gas field for the national grid.
