Gazette notification issued banning Jamaat-Shibir
The government has banned all political activities of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its wings, according to a home ministry gazette notification issued this afternoon.
Following Bangladesh's independence, the 1972 constitution banned the formation and operation of associations, unions, or political parties based on religion. The party now faced another ban due to security concerns.
Under Section 18 (1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Jamaat-e-Islami, Chhatra Shibir, and their affiliated organizations are banned. Earlier, the law ministry forwarded the file to the home ministry with a legal opinion supporting the ban.
Government ministers have accused Jamaat and its student organization Islami Chhatra Shibir of involvement in the violence surrounding the quota reform movement. In this context, top leaders of the alliance agreed to ban Jamaat-Shibir during the 14-party meeting led by the Awami League on Monday (July 29).
The meeting, chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulted in a decision to ban Jamaat and Chhatrashibir. Subsequently, the government issued an executive order to officially implement the ban.
