Hannan Masud's street rally attacked, 5 injured

A street rally of National Citizens Party (NCP) senior joint chief coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud has come under attack in Noakhali.

The incident took place at 7:30pm on Monday at Jahajmara Bazar in Hatia Upazila. Hannan claimed that he along with five to six party fellows were injured in the attack.

Hannan Masud alleged that the attack was led by some people expelled from the local unit BNP.

Immediately after the attack, NCP activists and supporters have been holding a sit-in programme on the road at Jahajmara Bazar since 8:30 pm demanding that the culprits be brought to justice. Their sit-in programme was going on till 11 pm when this report was written.

According to sources, Hannan Masud came to Hatia on Saturday to inquire about the distressed people of the area. He was addressing a street rally at 7:30 pm after Iftar on Monday. At that time, a group of people led a procession from the west side of the market and launched an attack.

Hannan Masud told a newspaper: "We were talking to people. At that time, some people expelled from BNP led a procession and entered our meeting. They attacked our people. Some of us were injured in the attack."

Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Ajmal Huda said that he had heard about the attack on Hannan Masud's rally. He was heading towards the spot.

When contacted, Hatia Upazila BNP convener Fazlul Haque said that he did not know anything.
