HC orders BUET authorities to return hall seat to Imtiaz
The High Court on Monday ordered the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to restore the hall seat of a civil engineering department student and Chhatra League’s central committee leader Imtiaz Hossain Rabbi.
Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar’s bench issued the order after hearing a petition on Monday (April 8).
According to the writ source, in the face of student agitation, the BUET authorities canceled Imtiaz Hossain Rabbi's hall seat on the allegation of involvement in student politics on campus. Imtiaz Hossain Rabbi filed a writ in the High Court challenging its validity. The writ sought a direction to return the seat to him. Barrister Harunur Rashid filed the writ on behalf of Imtiaz.
In 2019, BUET authorities banned student politics on the campus after the brutal murder of Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of the university’s electrical and electronics engineering department.
However, the Chhatra League is trying to return politics there in various ways. Recently, with the help of BUET student Imtiaz Rabbi, several leaders and activists including the president of the Central Chhatra League entered the campus at midnight. The general students of BUET started protesting against this incident and demanding the expulsion of Imtiaz Rabbi and others. Imtiaz Rabbi was expelled from his hall after accepting the demands of the agitators.
Later, the High Court suspended the notice by which BUET banned student politics in view of Imtiaz Hossain Rabbi's writ. As a result, according to lawyers, there is no longer any obstacle to student politics on BUET campus.
