The High Court has asked the authorities concerned to stop the construction of swimming pool in resorts by cutting hills in Sajek tourist area in Rangamati's Baghaichhari.

An HC bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Raziq Al Jalil passed the order on Tuesday (April 2) holding the preliminary hearing of a writ petition.

The HC also issued a ruling asking as to why those involved in unauthorized mountain cutting will not be brought to justice.

Human rights organization Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed the writ petition citing a newspaper report. HRPB Chairman and Supreme Court Advocate Monjil Morshed filed the petition.

He said: "A private company named 'Meghpalli Resort' is working to build a swimming pool by cutting hills in Sajek. It has the risk of destroying the natural balance and landslides. The court heard the matter and ordered to stop the construction of the swimming pool and stop the cutting of mountains without permission in Sajek and surrounding areas. It has also ordered to identify and take action against those involved in unauthorized hill cutting.”

He also said that an officer not below the joint secretary has been instructed to investigate the issue of construction of swimming pool by cutting hills and submit a report to the court.
