Health Directorate driver Malek sentenced to 13 years in prison

A Dhaka court has sentenced former driver of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abdul Malek to 13 years in prison for acquiring illegal wealth.

Judge Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 announced the verdict on Sunday.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for acquiring wealth beyond known sources and three years in prison for concealing information. He was also fined Tk 100,000 in both cases and sentenced to six months in prison for non-payment of the fine. Since the two sentences will run concurrently, Malek will have to serve a maximum sentence of 10 years, ACC prosecutor Asaduzzaman Rana said.

In addition, the court ordered the confiscation of Tk 1,50,31,810 which Malek had illegally acquired, in favour of the state.
