Heavy rain rises Gomti water level above danger
Due to heavy rainfall over the past three days, Cumilla has recorded 274 mm of rain, including 56 mm falling in the last 24 hours, resulting in the water flow of the Gomti River to reach dangerous levels.
More heavy rain is expected in the area.
Apart from this, heavy rain has resulted in waterlogging across various areas of Cumilla city.
In the Cumilla region, 4,000 acres of vegetable fields in Gomti Char have been flooded and destroyed.
Hundreds of houses are submerged, leaving thousands of people are in trouble.
Additionally, heavy rainfall at the source of the Gomti River in Tripura, India, has raised concerns about the possibility of a breach in the weakened section of the 85 km Gomti Dam, which extends from Cuttack Bazar to Daudkandi in Cumilla Sadar Upazila.
Cumilla Water Development Board Executive Engineer Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman said, "The Water Development Board is repairing the vulnerable sections along both banks of the Gomti River."
"Gomti has not had such high water levels from upstream in the past 15 years," he added.
