Heavy rainfall and landslides cut 0ff Bandarban-Ruma road
Continuous heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure system has triggered multiple landslides in Bandarban, disrupting road communication between Bandarban and Ruma since Friday morning.
According to local officials, 173 millimeters of rain fell over the past 24 hours by 9 AM Friday. The persistent rain has increased water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers, nearing dangerous levels.
Landslides and mudslides have blocked several internal roads, including Ruma, Thanchi, Lama-Suvalak, Rowangchhari-Ruma, and Thanchi-Alikadam, making travel hazardous. Flooding has also affected low-lying areas such as Army Para, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Islampur, and Wabdra in the district headquarters, with water accumulating up to knee height.
Residents report severe waterlogging in the town due to clogged drainage systems, with many homes inundated. In Kachingghata, landslides have damaged roads and protective walls, adding to the residents’ woes.
Transport leader Md. Jafar Ullah confirmed that landslides near Murung Bazar have halted all vehicle movement on the Ruma road. He warned that slippery conditions make the roads dangerous.
Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Rini said the administration has opened 220 temporary shelters across 34 unions in seven upazilas to accommodate displaced residents. Authorities are conducting loudspeaker announcements urging people living in vulnerable foothill areas to relocate to safer shelters.
The district administration, in coordination with municipal bodies, union councils, fire services, and the Red Crescent, is actively monitoring the situation and advising residents to stay alert.
