ICJ seeks information about Gaza aid from Israel by today
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) yesterday (May 17) asked Israel to provide more information about aid in Gaza “evacuation zones”, giving it a deadline of 4:00pm today (May 18) to respond.
The ICJ ended a two-day hearing on emergency measures sought by South Africa in Israel’s war on Gaza.
It was the fourth time South Africa appealed to the court this year, as part of a genocide case it initiated against Israel in December 2023.
South Africa asked the court to order an end to Israel’s Rafah attack, which it calls the “last refuge” in Gaza.
South Africa appealed for several other “provisional measures”, including that Israel allows unimpeded access to Gaza for aid providers, journalists and investigators.
Israel argued Yesterday (May 17) that it has the right to continue its offensive on Rafah to defend itself against Hamas.
It accused South Africa of making “a mockery of the heinous charge of genocide” and “dragging Israel to court endlessly”.

The ICJ is expected to rule on the emergency measures sought by South Africa next week. It will likely be years before it makes a final judgment on the case.
