Imposing VAT on metro rail deemed a misstep: Quader
Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, criticized the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for imposing a 15 percent VAT on metro rail, deeming it an incorrect decision. Quader questioned the justification behind such taxation, citing the absence of VAT on metro rail in India. He informed the Prime Minister of the issue, expressing confidence in her consideration of the matter.
The minister came up with these remarks while speaking at a branding seminar on Dhaka Metro Rail at Hotel Intercontinental in the capital on Sunday (May 19).
Obaidul Quader said, "Metro rail is no longer a dream, it is a visible reality. Our metro rail system is exceptionally beautiful and free from noise pollution, serving as a valuable asset to our nation. However, the pillars are full of posters, untidy and dirty."
"Our goal was to finish six MRT lines by 2030. Currently, the groundwork for lines 1 and 5 has been completed," he added.
Quader urged passengers to be more aware of traveling metro rail.
