Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday that the political situation in Bangladesh is an "internal matter," but India is eager to maintain the stable relationship they have enjoyed. In an interview with NDTV, Jaishankar underlined the maxim that neighbouring nations are "dependent on each other". He touched on Russia's war on Ukraine and Delhi's potential peacemaker role in that conflict, as well as Iran leader Ayatollah Khamenei's remark, the war in Gaza, and a flurry of foreign visits in the first 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term. "What happens is their internal matter. Bangladesh is our neighbour and the relationship, on our part, is something we want to keep stable. We have good trade... our people-to-people ties are good... I want to keep the relationship that way," Jaishankar said.

ছাত্র-জনতার বিক্ষোভে গত ৫ আগস্ট প্রধানমন্ত্রীর পদ থেকে শেখ হাসিনা ক্ষমতাচ্যুত হবার পর বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে ভারতের সম্পর্ক টানাপোড়েন চলছে। তবে গণঅভ্যুত্থানে সরকার পতনসহ যা কিছু হচ্ছে তা বাংলাদেশের 'অভ্যন্তরীণ বিষয়' এবং এ নিয়ে ভারতের মন্তব্য করা ঠিক হবে না বলে মনে করেন ভারতীয় পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এস জয়শঙ্কর। ভারতের সংবাদমাধ্যম এনডিটিভিকে দেওয়া এক সাক্ষাৎকারে ভারতের পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এস জয়শঙ্কর বলেছেন, আমরা বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক স্থিতিশীল রাখতে চাই। প্রতিবেশীরা একে অপরের ওপর নির্ভরশীল। ‘দুদেশের সম্পর্ক আমাদের দিক থেকে স্থিতিশীল রাখতে চাই, সামনে এগিয়ে নিতে চাই। আমাদের পারস্পরিক ভালো সহযোগিতা রয়েছে, আমাদের ভালো বাণিজ্য রয়েছে, জনগণের সঙ্গে জনগণের ভালো সহযোগিতা রয়েছে, আমি তো সেই পথ ধরেই এগিয়ে যেতে চাই,' যোগ করেন তিনি। এর আগে ভারতের পররাষ্ট্রনীতি বিষয়ক এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি বলেন, ‘ভারতের উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা পররাষ্ট্রনীতির মাধ্যমে কীভাবে এগিয়ে নেওয়া যায়, আমাদের কূটনীতি ও অন্যান্য আলোচনা সেটাকে কেন্দ্র করেই হয়। সেইসঙ্গে এটা আমাদেরও দায়িত্ব যে পৃথিবীতে শান্তি বজায় থাকুক। এটা আমাদের জন্যও প্রয়োজন।'
