A day after India’s precision counterstrike dubbed Operation Sindoor, intense cross-border shelling by the Pakistani Army killed 13 people—including four children and an Indian soldier—and injured several others across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a statement from the Indian Army, "During the night of May 7–8, 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using small arms and artillery guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor in J&K. The Indian Army responded proportionately."

The attack follows India’s Operation Sindoor, launched early on May 7, which involved 24 precision missile strikes targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These camps were linked to terrorist groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).

In retaliation, Pakistan carried out one of its most intense artillery and mortar bombardments in recent years, targeting forward villages along the LoC.

Among the deceased is soldier Dinesh Kumar Sharma from Haryana’s Poonch district. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini paid tribute on social media, stating, “Every citizen of the country is proud of your martyrdom. The nation will never forget your sacrifice.”

Tensions have been high in the region since April 22, when terrorists attacked Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination often referred to as "Mini Switzerland." The assault caused panic among tourists and has been labeled one of the most severe terror incidents since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following that attack, and since April 24, Pakistani troops have increased unprovoked firing along multiple sectors of the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.
