Italy interested in recruiting Bangladeshi workers: Home Adviser

Italy has expressed a keen interest in hiring Bangladeshi workers through legal channels, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Monday.

He made the remarks while briefing reporters after a meeting with his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi, at his office in Dhaka.

“The Italian government appreciates the dedication and hard work of Bangladeshi workers and is willing to bring in more manpower from Bangladesh through official means,” said the adviser.

He added, “They emphasised the importance of legal migration and expressed their reluctance to encourage risky sea routes often used via third countries. We also urged them to consider regularising the status of Bangladeshis already residing in Italy through irregular channels.”

The meeting also focused on enhancing cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of both countries, including the police, coast guard, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Regarding the recent attack on NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah, the adviser stated that 54 individuals have already been brought under legal action in connection with the incident. “No one involved will be spared,” he said firmly.
