Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has started an awareness campaign to sensitise city dwellers to control aedes mosquitoes. As part of this campaign, the city dwellers will be fined or jailed if aedes mosquito larvae are found at their home or office after April 27.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam came up with the warning at a discussion organised at ward number-7 in Rupnagar area at Mirpur in the capital on Monday (April 22) morning. Earlier he officially inaugurated the awareness campaign.

Atiqul Islam said, “Awareness activities have been started to control aedes mosquitoes. I request everyone to keep their homes and offices clean. Aedes mosquito larvae live in stagnant clear water. After April 27, if the larvae of aedes mosquito are found in any home or office, the owner will be fined or jailed.”

The mayor said, “Houses are painted to beautify, but after painting, empty bottles are left on the roof. Tea cups or packets of chips are thrown everywhere. Rainwater accumulates in these bottles and packets and becomes a breeding ground for aedes mosquitoes. The city dwellers will get cash from councilor office, if they give these things to us.”

He also said, 'If we leave these things anywhere, aedes mosquitoes will be born and bring our death. Mosquitoes do not recognise anyone, mosquitoes only know blood. Mosquitoes do not spare anybody.”

After the meeting, a procession was brought out with the ward residents. After parading on road number 23 of Rupnagar residential area, the procession ended at Rupnagar main road. Later the mayor and others distributed awareness leaflets.

In this regard, the officials of DNCC said each ward councilor of DNCC has been allocated Tk 50,000 for conducting awareness activities. With this money, the councilors will hold awareness meetings at educational institutions, mosques and other places to make the people of their respective areas aware.

The awareness campaign has been launched at the same time in 54 wards of DNCC today.
