Jashore experiences country's highest temperature, public life disrupted

The country recorded the highest temperature -- 42.6 degree Celsius in Jashore. The temperature was recorded by the meteorological department of Jashore Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman Air Base after 3.00pm on Saturday (April 20).

According to the Meteorological Office, an intense heat wave is passing over the region, with temperatures steadily climbing each day. Reports suggest that there is little hope for relief from the heatwave soon.

On Thursday (April 18), the maximum temperature in Jashore reached 40.4 degrees Celsius. By 2:00 pm on Friday (April 19), it had risen to 41 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature of the year thus far. However, on Saturday (April 20), the temperature soared to 42.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing all records of the preceding days.

The intense heatwave in Jashore has severely disrupted the daily lives of its residents over the past few days. With fewer people in the city, those who work outdoors are enduring hardship. Many seek shelter under tree shade to escape the scorching sun. Some find solace in sipping lemonade. However, it's the rickshaw pullers who are facing the most difficulty.

Hasmat Ali, who earns his livelihood by driving a rickshaw, said, "Driving a rickshaw in this intense heat is challenging. However, I have to continue working to support my family."

Farmer Israfil said, "Due to the intense heat, working in the field has become impossible for the past few days. It feels like fire is scorching my eyes and face. Consequently, I've been forced to stay at home without working. Moreover, those hiring workers are avoiding doing so in this weather. As a result, life has become quite challenging."

Meanwhile, as temperatures soar, the incidence of diarrhoea cases has risen, resulting in 25 patients, including 11 children, seeking treatment at Jashore General Hospital's diarrhoea ward. However, with only five beds available, the situation has become challenging.

In response, Dr Abdus Samad, acting Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Jashore General Hospital, has strongly urged individuals not to go out in the hot sun unless it is very necessary.
