JnU assistant proctor, classmate sued

Tahmina Shabnam, the mother of JnU student Fairuz Abontika filed an abetment of suicide case against her classmate Amman and Assistant Poctor Din Islam at Kotwali Model Police Station in Cumilla.

According to the case statement, Abontika's classmate Amman Siddique was sexually harassing her. When she complained to Assistant Proctor Din Islam, he insulted her without taking any action.

Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz Hossain confirmed the news.

He said, "Abontika's mother filed the case as the plaintiff. We will discuss with the authorities and take appropriate action."

Meanwhile, police have picked up Jagannath University student Amman Siddique and Assistant Proctor Din Islam in connection with the death.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman confirmed the news.

He said Din Islam and Amman were under police surveillance since the incident happened and now they are under police custody.

Fairuz Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of JnU Law Department, hanged herself at her Cumilla residence on Friday after accusing her classmate Amman and the assistant proctor of harassment on a Facebook post.

The incident sparked protest among the general students and netizens and the university administration relieved assistant proctor Din Islam from his duty and suspended Amman Siddique.

জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আইন বিভাগের শিক্ষার্থী ফাইরুজ অবন্তিকাকে আত্মহত্যায় প্ররোচিত করার অভিযোগে সহপাঠী আম্মান সিদ্দিকী ও সহকারী প্রক্টর দ্বীন ইসলামের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা হয়েছে। শনিবার (১৬ মার্চ) রাত ৮টার দিকে অবন্তিকার মা তাহমিনা শবনম মামলাটি করেন। কুমিল্লা কোতয়ালি মডেল থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) ফিরোজ হোসেন বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেছেন।

মামলার বিবরণ থেকে জানা যায়, অবন্তিকার সহপাঠী আম্মান সিদ্দিকী অফ লাইন ও অনলাইনে অবন্তিকাকে যৌন হয়রানি করে আসছিলেন। তার বিরুদ্ধে সহাকারী প্রক্টরের কাছে অভিযোগ করলে তিনি অভিযোগের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা না নিয়ে উল্টো অবন্তিকাকেই নানাভাবে অপমান করেন।
