JU suspends 4 students over drug-related offences
Jahangirnagar University (JU) has suspended four students after allegations of possessing and consuming alcohol during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The decision, based on a preliminary investigation by the university’s proctorial team, was taken under the Jahangirnagar University Student Discipline Ordinance, 2018.
In a press release issued late on Wednesday, Mohammad Mohiuddin, acting director of JU’s Public Relations Office, confirmed the suspensions.
To further examine the case, the university has formed a committee led by the provost of Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall, with instructions to submit a report and recommendations within 15 working days.
The suspended students include Md Shipon Hossain and Satirtha Biswas Bandhan from the 51st batch of the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, along with Hroi Muing Sang Marma and Krishan Chandra Barmlon from the Department of Drama and Dramatics.
The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year's Eve, near the Wazed Mia Science Research Centre. The proctorial team, during a routine patrol, discovered two groups of students engaged in alcohol consumption. The first group consisted of two JU female students and two outsiders who were caught drinking. The second group involved one male and one female JU student along with three outsiders, who were found with one liter of alcohol.
The proctorial team detained all individuals, confiscated the alcohol, and brought them to the Proctor’s Office for questioning. Written statements were collected from those involved, and the external students were handed over to the Ashulia Police Station.
JU authorities have stated that they will inform the respective institutions of these external students, requesting disciplinary action.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the campus remains free from drug-related activities.
