Troops from Pakistan and India exchanged fire overnight across the Line of Control in disputed Kashmir, officials said on Friday, after the United Nations urged the nuclear-armed rivals to show "maximum restraint" following a deadly shooting in the region, reports NDTV.

Relations have plunged to their lowest level in years, with India accusing Pakistan of supporting "cross-border terrorism" after gunmen carried out the worst attack on civilians killing 26 individuals in contested Muslim-majority Kashmir for a quarter of a century.

Following the killing, India officially notified Pakistan of its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with immediate effect, citing violations by Islamabad.

According to a letter from India’s Secretary of Water Resources, Debashree Mukherjee, addressed to her Pakistani counterpart Syed Ali Murtaza, Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism targeting Jammu and Kashmir undermines India’s treaty rights.

"The principle of honoring treaties in good faith is fundamental.

However, what we are witnessing is Pakistan’s ongoing cross-border terrorism aimed at the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir," Mukherjee stated in the letter.
