Khagrachari floods submerge 30 villages, leave 250 tourists stranded
Heavy rainfall and landslides have caused the Maini and Kachalong rivers in Khagrachhari to overflow, resulting in flooding along most of the Khagrachhari-Sajek road.
Due to waterlogging, arround 250 tourists have been stranded in the Sajek area .
Around 30 villages in Dighinala’s Merung and Kabakhali Unions have been submerged by floodwaters. However, flooding in Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila is beginning to ease as the Chengi River’s water level decreases.
On Tuesday (August 20) afternoon, water levels had risen to five to six feet at Kabakhali, Baghaihat Bazar, Machalong Bazar, and several other locations along the road to Sajek. Consequently, all tourist vehicle services on the road have been suspended.
Shirin Akhter, the Executive Officer of Baghaichari Upazila, stated, "At least 250 tourists are stranded in Sajek as traffic on the Sajek road has been halted due to rising water at various points. They will not be able to return today."
Apart from this, the road in the headquarters area of the Dighinala-Longdu route has sunk due to a landslide, leading to a complete halt in road communication with Longdu in Rangamati.
