Landslide claims three lives in Sylhet
Three members of a family—a husband, wife, and their child—were found dead after being trapped in their house when a hill collapsed due to heavy rain in the Chamelibagh residential area, within ward number 35 of Sylhet city.
The deceased was identified as Karim Uddin (35), son of late Alauddin of that area, his wife Shammi Akhter Rozi (26), and their 15-month-old son, Nafji Tanim.
The bodies were recovered from house No. 89 of Road No. 2 in Chamelibagh area of Ward No. 35 of City Corporation around 1.00pm on Monday (June 10). Mohammad Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, Officer in Charge (OC) of Sylhet Shahparan Police Station, confirmed the matter.
Harunur Rashid Chowdhury said, "The collapse of a hillock onto a house, caused by heavy rain, has resulted in three individuals being trapped under the rubble. Upon receiving the information, a police team was dispatched to the location at 7:00 am."
Moniruzzaman, deputy director of Sylhet Fire Service, told reporters, "Three fire service teams, along with Army personnel, joined forces for the rescue operation immediately after the collapse."
Jahangir Alam, councilor of Ward No. 35, said, "Six individuals of two families were trapped under a house due to landslides. With the combined efforts of the police, fire service, and our team, we rescued the remaining three family members in a stable condition."
