Landslide kills 2 in Ukhia Rohingya camp
Two people have died in a landslide at at a Rohingya refrugee camp at Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday.
The incident took place in Rohingya camps No. 8 and 11 in Ukhiya in the wee hours of Wednesday (July 3).
“One of the deceased is a local resident from Balukhali area of Camp No. 8. However, their names and addresses could not be known immediately,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia police station Shamim Hossain.
He said landslides occurred in camps No. 11 and 8 of Ukhia Rohingya camp. Two died in this incident.
Earlier on June 19, 10 people were killed in separate landslides in a Rohingya camp in Ukhia. Among the casualties, one died in camp-14, four in camp-10, three in camp-9, one in camp-8 and one in camp-1W. Two of them are Bangladeshis.
Incidentally, Cox's Bazar has been receiving continuous heavy downpour for the past one week. As a result, the Rohingya camps are at risk of landslides as the camps are located at foothills of mountains. Apart from the Rohingya camp, some hilly areas of Cox's Bazar are also at garve risk.
