Legendary Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal dies
Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, passed away at the age of 90. He breathed his last on Monday at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, where he was undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease.
Shyam Benegal's career spanned several decades, during which he directed acclaimed films such as 'Ankur' (1973), 'Nishant' (1975), 'Manthan' (1976), and 'Bhumika' (1977). These works were pivotal in the new wave film movement of the 1970s and 1980s, characterised by their realism and social commentary.
Benegal's films often explored complex themes and featured strong female characters, earning him multiple National Film Awards. He also created notable documentaries and television series, including 'Bharat Ek Khoj' (1988) and 'Samvidhaan' (2014), which focused on India's Constitution. His legacy includes a rich filmography that has influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
Shyam Benegal's last directorial feature was 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation', released in 2023. This film tells the story of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh. Known for his impactful storytelling, Benegal's work has greatly influenced Indian cinema.
Benegal was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He also received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema, in 2005.
