Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan has said that along with illegal firearms, a lot of licensed weapons were used during the anti-discrimination students protest to suppress it.

The recently appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) made the statement while briefing the media on Saturday.

Regarding the use of firearms, he said: "We are trying to track down the users of those licensed weapons. The legal process is continuous, and while it may take time to fully unfold, it is actively ongoing."

Noting that restoring full police services may take some time due to the current situation in the country, he said: "The police department is working hard to restore the professionalism within the officials ans staff members."

"Because of some unprofessional and over ambitious officials, the entire police force took stand against the mass people. This caused a massive break down in their professional morale," he added.

Mentioning that they are doing their best to reform the unit with professionalism, he further said: "It will take some time. We ask for your trust, and we will strive to deliver the best service with our professionalism."

The DMP chief also emphasised the importance of public cooperation with traffic police. “Reducing traffic congestion to a manageable level is possible with everyone's cooperation,” he noted.

In response to questions about the arrest and remand of high-profile individuals, the DMP Commissioner clarified, “Those placed on remand are suspects in cases related to the recent movement.

“The police are investigating whether they were involved in inciting unrest through financial support, advice, or public statements.”

On the topic of corruption within the police, the DMP Commissioner assured that there would be zero tolerance for corruption, irregularities, and misconduct within the force.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Ansar and BGB members for their support to the police during this challenging period.
