Lightning in Khagrachari kills 4 including mother, son

Four people, including a mother and son, died in separate lightning strikes in three upazilas of Khagrachari during a storm on Sunday (May 5) morning.

The deceased have been identified as Hasina Begum (30) and her son Hanif Mia (8) of Madhyabetchari in Dighinala upazila, Ganej Marma (50) of Durgam Hajachra Para village at Ramgarh upazila and Sumika Tripura (27) of Shashikarbari Para of Belchhari Union in Matiranga upazila of the district.

Locals said there was lightning with heavy rain in the early morning of Sunday at Madhyabetchari village at Merung union of Dighinala upazila. At that time, the tin roof of the earthen house of Sadek Mia caught fire due to lightning. As a result, his wife Hasina Begum and son Hanif Mia, who were inside the house, were burnt to death. However, his other son Md Hafiz (11) survived.

A farmer named Ganej Marma from Hajachhara Para village in Ramgarh upazila and another person Sumika Tripura from Matiranga upazila also died at the same time on the same day being struck by lightning, said OC of Dighinala police station Md Nurul Haque.

He said that after the legal process, the bodies will be handed over to the families.
