Long tailback on Babubazar Bridge today also
A long tailback has been created on Babubazar Bridge (Buriganga Bridge-2) in the capital for the third consecutive day since Sunday (February 25) morning, creating immense sufferings for the Dhaka-bound passengers from different southern districts.
The traffic jam was caused by the entry of Dhaka-bound passenger transport from Barisal, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, and Jashore.
The traffic jams have spread to other roads of Keraniganj. Working people of Keraniganj were seen crossing Buriganga Bridge-2 on foot.
Mentionable, due to the ongoing renovation of Postgola Bridge (Buriganga Bridge-1) on the Buriganga River, severe traffic jams have been occurring on Buriganga Bridge-2 for the last two days.
On Sunday also, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) stopped all traffic for the renovation of Buriganga Bridge-1, creating a 3-kilometre long severe traffic jams at the southern end of Buriganga Bridge-2, along the road from Kadmatoli to Nazirer Bagh area in Keraniganj.
Vehicles have been standing on Babubazar Bridge for hours as traffic has come to a complete standstill. After waiting in the buses and other public vehicles for a long time, thousands of men and women got down from the vehicles and started walking to their destinations carrying heavy luggages on their shoulders and hands.
Md Iqbal, a bus passenger going to Gulistan, said, “It took more than an hour to reach Kadmatoli from Nazirer Bagh which normally takes a maximum of 10 minutes. Seeing the condition of traffic on the bridge, it seems that it will take a few more hours to reach Gulistan. So, I have started walking towards Gulistan.”
RHD Sub-Divisional Engineer Harun-or-Rashid said, “The weight carrying capacity of Buriganga Bridge-1 is being tested. Hopefully, light vehicles will be able to move on the bridge soon.”
Zakir Hossain, Inspector of Dhaka District South Traffic Police Office, said that the traffic police members are working to maintain normal traffic in the area of Buriganga II (Babubazar) Bridge and Bangabandhu Expressway connecting road.
