Madrasa teacher held for allegedly beating student to death

Police found the body of a student from the Hifz section of Al-Muin Islami Academy Madrasa in the Uttar Temuhuni area of Lakshmipur town.

The body of 12-year-old Sanim Hossain was recovered orecovered around 6.30pm Tuesday.

According to the family, Sanim died after being beaten by his teacher, Mahmudur Rahman.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Rezaul Haque said, “We went to the scene after receiving information that a madrasa student had committed suicide. There were dark marks on the neck and other parts of the body. The accused teacher has been detained and is being questioned. The actual cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report.”

Family members claimed that Sanim was beaten by Mahmudur Rahman in the morning at the madrasa. Later in the afternoon, the madrasa authorities informed them that Sanim had committed suicide in the toilet. However, the family found his body not in the toilet, but on a bed in a room on the ground floor of the madrasa. They believe it was a planned murder.

Teacher Mahmudur Rahman said, “I did beat Sanim lightly, but he committed suicide in the toilet.”

Just last week, another teacher of Al-Muin Islami Academy Madrasa was accused of beating a student. Maulana Umair was fined Tk20,000 in a local arbitration after allegedly abusing Mohammad Forhad (13), a student of the Hifz section.
