Man arrested over idol vandalism not an Indian citizen
Faridpur police have clarified that the man, Sanjit Biswas (45), arrested in connection with the vandalism of idols at the Hari Temple and Kali Temple in Bhanga upazila, is not an Indian citizen.
Additional Superintendent of Police Shailen Chakma of Faridpur confirmed this through a press release issued on Monday (September 1).
He said, "Following a press release on Monday, Nishikant Biswas (72), has confirmed that the detained Sanjit Biswas (45) is his son, who resides in Nizamkandi, Kaziaganj, Gopalganj, and is mentally ill."
"Sanjit's father also explained that Sanjit frequently traveled to India, which is why he sometimes spoke both Bengali and Hindi," he added.
Earlier, the temple authorities filed a written complaint with Bhanga police station on Saturday night after discovering that several idols had been damaged.
During the investigation, authorities found two individuals near the scene: one lying on a discarded cot and the other on the ground beside him. Locals identified the first person, but the second did not reveal his identity during interrogation.
However, Sanjit is currently in jail under court orders.
