Mayor Atiq enjoys shower in DNCC's artificial rain
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has arranged ‘artificial rain’ to prevent air pollution in Dhaka and keep the city cool amid the ongoing heat wave. The initiative has been taken to provide free drinking water in 54 wards of DNCC. Apart from this, several other initiatives are being taken on the advice of Chief Heat Officer (CHO) Bushra Afreen, said DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam.
At 11.30am on Saturday, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam visited the water spray (water spraying) program of DNCC to prevent air pollution and keep the city cool during the intense heat in Agargaon of the capital.
During the visit, the Mayor said, "Two water cannons will be used to spray the main roads while 10 water bowsers will be used to spray the side roads. Through these the roads will be wet and kept cool. Apart from this, I have instructed the concerned department to arrange artificial rain like spray cannons in the parks of DNCC. Artificial rain will be arranged in the parks within the next week."
DNCC Mayor came at Syed Mahbub Morshed Sarani of Agargaon and inspected the special van kept for supplying clean drinking water and drank the water himself by leaving the tab. Later, when water began to sprinkle like artificial rain through the spray cannon, he enjoyed shower with excited children and teenagers.
According to the DNCC Public Relations Department, three special vans (containing 500 liter water tanks) have been brought down in each ward to provide drinking water to the pedestrians. The vans will move around the ward with clean drinking water. These vans are made in small size, to enter the city alleys.
Mayor Atiqul Islam called upon the city residents and said, 'I request the shopkeepers, traders and owners association leaders of DNCC area, you should arrange a drum for drinking water in front of every shop, shopping mall, market. Everyone should be able to drink water.
Regarding the recent criticism directed at the chief heat officer, the Mayor said, "Many are talking about the chief heat officer. They say she receives a salary from our city corporation. The chief heat officer is appointed by the Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation. They appointed seven people worldwide. She doesn’t get a single taka from the city corporation. She doesn’t even have a chair there."
