Metro rail earns Tk244 crore from ticket sales in one year
In the fiscal year 2023-24, Metro Rail generated nearly Tk244 crore from ticket sales alone, a significant rise compared to Tk18 crore earned in the previous fiscal year (2022-23).
Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Managing Director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), shared this update during a meeting with members of the Reporters for Rail and Road (RRR) at the Metro Rail depot in Uttara on Tuesday (February 4).
He said, "In the 2023-24 fiscal year, our revenue from ticket sales amounted to Tk243 crore 91 lakh 7 thousand 625. In contrast, in the 2022-23 fiscal year, we earned Tk18 crore 28 lakh 6 thousand 514."
Mohammad Abdur Rouf further said, "During the first year, we launched the service on an experimental basis, initially running trains only up to Agargaon with a limited number of trains—about ten daily. Gradually, we increased the number of trains, and last year, we expanded the service to its full capacity. Our fleet now operates 200 trains, and we've also started running services on Fridays, which was previously unavailable. These figures need to be analyzed over time."
"Yesterday, 382,000 passengers traveled on the metro, a significant jump from the initial 15-20 thousand. Our target is to transport 550,000 passengers, which we expect to achieve after reaching the break-even point. If we reduce the headway, we can reach this target sooner. We also anticipate a further increase in passengers once the service is extended to Tongi," he added.
